    1.Master some new words and phrases:
    rather, below, freeze, thick, plain
    2.Review attributive clauses which use "that" and "which".
    3.Go on learning about the geography of China.
    4.Talking about the life in the south and north of China.
    5.Strengthen the students' patrotism.
    【Teaching procedure】:
    Step 1 Review
    1.Guessing game. Give three descriptions about Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Then let the students guess.
    ⑴It's called the Oritental and Shopping Heaven. If you have a chance to visit it, you can visit Disneyland, Ocean Park and Victoryia Peak.
    ⑵People regard it as the Gambling City. In it, you can also visit Mazu Temple and Ruins of St. Paul.
    ⑶It lies in the southwest of China which is regarded as the Treasure Island of China.
    2.Show a map of China. Ask several students to point out the cities they know well and describe them simply.
    T: China is a large country. I think there are quite differences among different areas. Do you agree?
    Ss:Yes.
    T: Who can have a try to describe a city for us?
    Step 2 Presentation
    1.Describe the weather in local area and present the new words "rather, below, freeze".
    T: In winter the weather in Beijing is rather cold. When the temperature stays below zero, the water in the river often freezes. However, in summer, the weather is very hot, and the sun often shines brightly.
    2.Show two pictures. One is a picture of Northeast China, and the other is a picture of Hainan Island. Then let the students observe them and describe their differences in weather.
    3.Let the students read 1a, then complete the chart using the key words.

    4.Let the students sum up the differences between the north and the south and finish 1b.
    Step 3 Consolidation
    1.Let the students retell the passage, using the key words in the chart above. The teacher sums up this part so that the students can get a further understanding of the passage.
    2.Let the students work alone to make some sentences according to the map in 3.
    Example:
    Kunming which lies in the south of China is famous as the Spring City.
    3.Let several students read their sentences. Give praise or award to the students who do it better.
    Step 4 Practice
    1.Let the students sum up grammar focus in Topic 1. Add more if necessary.
    2.Let the students sum up useful expressions in Tipic 1. Add more if necessary.
    Step 5 Project
    1.Describe some features of a city or a place.
    2.If you are a guide, please design an ad to attract tourists.
    3.Let the students collect some pictures and information of their favorite places. Then make postcards and show them in class.

    1.China is a great country that has about 5,000 years of history.
    2.If you want to know more, I can fetch you Guide to China. It's a book which introduces China in detail.
